antigua
eric and i went to antigua for a week. it was paradise. on the way there, the airline lost our luggage. when learning this, we were of course bummed and when the cab driver and hotel said- where is your luggage- it was painful to say we didn't have any. we didn't have a toothbrush, saline solution or, most importantly, a bathing suit. but luckily the one and only shop on our resort did, so we were soon back in business. after getting new suits and toothbrush, it made me wonder why i had spent all that time packing and worrying about what to bring. all i really needed was a suit and toothbrush.
the resort was amazing. it was all inclusive so we didn't have to worry about a thing. each night, we had to dress up for dinner, so it was like having a new date every night-- we had more dates in that one week than we have in the past year, i swear. there was very little to do there, which was perfect. there were no phones, no televisions, no computers, no clocks. our tummies told us when to eat, our eyes told us when we were tired, the sun and birds told us when to wake up.
the resort is made up of a handful of cottages-- 40, i think. it was extremely peaceful. we spent our days reading, sleeping, swimming, eating, chatting and staring into space. we only left the resort once for a nature tour/snorkleing trip. and twice we took out the Hobie catamaran. once we sea kayaked. otherwise, we rested. in the sun.
home
we came home to our sweet angel baby adam. i was so afraid he wouldn't recognize me, but he was so glad to see us and melted my heart. sadly, the next day, saturday, we got a call that my uncle died unexpectedly. i purchased a plane ticket and unpacked, re packed, and tuesday morning at 3am adam and i left home to head for the airport. 6am flight. i traveled with a baby, a carseat, a stroller, a suitcase and a diaperbag. alone. but we made it safe and sound and with all our pieces in tact. adam was a dreamboat on the plane, as he is everywhere else. he never cried a peep, flirted with flight attendants and fellow passengers and shared a blueberry muffin with me.
funeral
we stayed at my grandma's house, adam's great grandma, so they got to meet. the funeral activities were very sad because the death was so unexpected and, well, of course funerals are very sad. but my grandma was great and it was so nice to see her. i had to laugh so much, tho, b/c while at the funeral my grandma babysat adam. and while he was with her, he had what eric and i call "a blowout." when i came home, he was almost naked and his clothes were hanging on the back porch. my grandma said she needed a valium. ha.
on thursday, 3am, adam i packed ourselves back up and headed back to the dc area. thursday afternoon i headed to work, barely alive.
wedding
this weekend eric's good friend got married and eric was the best man in the wedding. friday night rehearsal, saturday wedding and sunday brunch. so much love and friends and family. it was all beautiful and so much fun.
death
this weekend, our family dog, Haddie Mae, passed away. this is very, very sad for our entire family. she was my parents' baby. we picked her up when i was 15. i drove the car there, my learners' permit fresh. she rode home in my dad's lap, crying the entire way, so tiny she could fit in your two hands. my mom said she was so ugly she was cute. and it was true. she grew up with us. we used to take her on our boat and she'd jump off to swim. to get back in the boat, she'd swim to the ladder and try to climb the ladder the same way my brother and i did. as she got bigger, my parents bought her a harness so we could easily lift her back in the boat. and before we'd go on the boat, we'd get out the harness and tell her to come get her bathing suit on. she'd get soooo excited, knowing where we were going. we had to put sunscreen on her head and nose so she wouldn't burn.
we loved Haddie. so much.
but it's better she's at rest. she had a hard time standing because her hips were so weak. she was deaf. she had a bad eye. and lately she had a respiratory problem making it hard for her to breathe.
she passed away at home with my parents there.

Sorry to hear about the passing of your uncle and about your family dog. I think a lot of people underestimate the love and bond that a family shares with their pet.
Also, glad you are back. Your readers have missed you!
