when we pulled the orange sled out of the closet this morning, adam said - what's that?  then he said - i sit in that boat?  we told him we'll sit in it soon and then we left for our first sledding adventure in maine.

first we stopped for brunch at a cafe just a hop skip and a jump from our building.  so close, in fact, adam and i have probably actually hopped, skipped and jumped by it 100 times.  it was divine.
yellow light pouring in, a big chalk specials board, beatles playing loudly, eggs benedict and fresh oj, eric home, adam in a snow suit.  perfect.

the hill was covered in kids and adam went down with eric twice.  and twice he screamed and cried the whole way down and then let eric drag him all the way back up on the sled.  when we asked him later, again and again, if he wanted to go down the hill just one more time, he shook his head and gave us a big NO.  later, at home, when i asked him about it he said - i go fast!   maybe he needs some time to warm up to the big orange boat-sled.

i went down the hill once, just me. (this is a lie.  i attempted to go once before and completely wiped out as i tried to avoid plowing a child.)  i would have liked to have gone more, but 1- going just once was probably a dumb idea for a pregnant lady like me in the first place.  and 2- walking back up the hill was EXHAUSTING. though i'm still not showing too much, i'm breathless more often, even just walking up a snow hill.  not to mention, my snow pants wouldn't button around my baby belly, so every five steps i had to try to pull them back up over my hips with my clunky gloved hands and big snow coat on top.  after this, i was happy to lay down and show adam how to make a snow angel.

we made lots of snow angles and threw lots of snowballs and adam rolled and played and jumped and crawled in the snow.  he gave a superior 2-yr-old tantrum performance when it was time to go home.  and while this was mildly embarrassing (as always), at least i know he had a good time after all.

I wish, wish, wish I could be there with you making snow angels and listening to the beatles over eggs benedict. Sounds like the perfect day!
